The boundary-spanning mechanisms of Nobel Prize winning papers

نویسندگان

چکیده

The breakthrough potentials of research papers can be explained by their boundary-spanning qualities. Here, for the first time, we apply structural variation analysis (SVA) model and its affiliated metrics to investigate extent which such qualities characterize a group Nobel Prize winning papers. We find that these share remarkable traits, marked exceptional abilities connect disparate topically-diverse clusters Further, publications exert variations on scale significantly alters betweenness centrality distributions existing intellectual space. Overall, SVA not only provides set leading indicators describing future papers, but also broadens our understanding similar prize-winning properties may have been overlooked among other regular publications.

The Nobel Prize delay

The 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Higgs and Englert for their prediction of the existence of the Higgs boson. Though the Higgs particle was experimentally discovered at CERN in 2012, the original theoretical works date back to the 1960s. Thus, it took about half a century of intense work to confirm their prediction. Long time lags between discovery and recognition are not unusual. ...

Autophagy Captures the Nobel Prize

This year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi for the discovery of the molecular principles governing autophagy, an intracellular degradation pathway routed via lysosomes or vacuoles. It is a story of a simple yet insightful yeast genetic screen that revealed the inner circuitry of one of the most powerful quality-control pathways in cells.
